How to teach music remotely

Here’s the complete setup for conducting real-time, online music lessons with LISTENTO. This workflow will allow you to share your knowledge with students worldwide in high quality, regardless of what you teach.

What you and your student will need:

First, let’s ensure you have everything you’ll need for the lesson.

– A stable internet connection
– Video call software
– The DAW of your choice
– The LISTENTO plugin (or desktop application)

In order to get the best audio quality possible for your lessons, both you and the student will need a LISTENTO license. Don’t worry, you can grab a free 7-day trial to test this setup and see if it works for you before committing to the paid subscription.

Now that you’ve both got everything you need, you’re ready to start setting up for your session together.

Setting up your session

Step 1: Start your video call

Your video call will be your main form of communication during your lessons. We recommend starting with this step to ensure you can easily communicate with each other during the next steps.

You can use whichever video software works best for you, but here is a list of some free video call software options that you can try out:

– FaceTime
– Google Meet
– Zoom (this is only free for up to 40-minutes)
– Skype

Within Zoom, you have the ability to see the latency of your video call by going to Settings, then Statistics and clicking across to Video. You can then match your latency in LISTENTO.

Step 2: Setting up your DAW

Now that you can freely communicate with each other, you can now begin setting up the session within your DAWs.

– Open your DAWs of choice and put the LISTENTO plugin on the projects/channels that you need each other to hear.
– This will vary depending on what you’re trying to achieve. For example, if you’re running 1-to-1 guitar lessons, you will only need to set up one channel each in order to hear each other’s guitars.
– However, if you’re giving your student(s) feedback on a mix that they’ve done, you’d need them to put the LISTENTO plugin on their master bus, so that you can hear the track in its entirety.

Step 3: Share your LISTENTO links

Finally, you’ll both need to start your streams and share them with each other. Here’s how:

– Login to your Audiomovers accounts.
– Start your streams and copy your LISTENTO streaming links.
– Exchange LISTENTO streaming links and paste their streaming link into your browser or the LISTENTO receiver plugin and press connect

Take it in turns to test your streams and make sure that you can hear each other’s audio in real-time. Once everything is working correctly you’ll be able to begin your lesson.

You now have all the technology you need to start teaching music lessons to anyone in the world. Check out these links for more information on teaching music production or guitar lessons with LISTENTO.
