Growing demand for immersive audio content has brought a lot of challenges to the audio world in the form of the skilled workforce needed and available facilities for Atmos playback.
Using Audiomovers’ LISTENTO application and routing tool OMNIBUS 2.0, you’ll be able to speed up the process of approval for immersive audio content without having to be present in a studio where the mix is taking place. All you need is access to a studio/listening room with the appropriate speaker configuration to give feedback and guidance to your mix engineer. Transmission: Dolby Atmos rendered output via Audiomovers’ OMNIBUS driver to the LISTENTO app.
Mixing immersive audio using LISTENTO in Logic Pro:
Logic Pro’s 10.7.3 update brought with it the ability to mix immersive audio natively in Logic Pro using the Dolby Atmos plugin, making it easier than ever to mix immersive audio, theoretically, with just a pair of over-ear monitoring headphones using the Dolby or Apple binaural renderers you’re able to mix for Atmos in Logic.
This is an excellent way for up-and-coming producers/mix engineers to get into the world of immersive audio production. However, this is no substitute for mixing with a 7.1.4 or 9.1.6 monitor layout in an isolated room. The benefit of this feature is to toggle between both renderers to check how your immersive mix translates to a binaural headphone mix.
LISTENTO can run as a 7.1.4 plugin allowing you to transmit your multi-channel master’s audio to collaborators for real-time remote mix feedback.
Using LISTENTO with the Dolby Renderer:
The problem arises when using the Dolby production suite, as you cannot add plugins to your multi-channel master. One effective workaround is using our tool OMNIBUS 2.0 with the LISTENTO desktop app.
By setting your Dolby production suite’s playback engine to one of OMNIBUS’ virtual drivers, you can route your 7.1.4 or 9.16 channel outputs into the LISTENTO app to be transmitted to your collaborator with minimal latency with lossless quality.
I’ve set my IO as OMNIBUS B and have routed channels 1-12 into OMNIBUS A. From here, I can open the LISTENTO app, select my input source as OMNIBUS A, and add 12 input channels to the app’s transmitter. When I play back my immersive session, I can also transmit the 12 individual channels to my collaborator.
Upon receiving a 7.1.4 LISTENTO stream, you can paste the link into a 7.1.4 instance of the receiver plugin or the LISTENTO App’s receiver. You can assign the output destination of incoming LISTENTO streams on a track-by-track basis, allowing you to correctly assign the 12 channels to your preferred speaker layout.
